Schengen Business Visa for UK Residents
If you live in the UK and need to travel to Europe for work-related reasons, you may need a Schengen business visa.
First thing you must understand: Your passport matters more than where you live.
- If you have a UK passport, you usually do not need a business visa for short visits
- If you live in the UK but hold a passport from a visa-required country, you must apply before travelling
Your UK residence permit, visa, or BRP does not replace the Schengen visa requirement.
What a Schengen Business Visa allows you to do
This visa is only for short, temporary business activities.
You can use it for things like:
- Attending meetings with clients or partners
- Going to conferences, trade fairs, or exhibitions
- Visiting company branches or offices
- Taking part in short business discussions or training
You cannot use it for:
- Full-time work
- Long-term employment
- Staying longer than 90 days
If you are a UK passport holder
You usually do not need a visa for short business trips, but this does not mean you can do any type of work.
You can:
- Attend meetings
- Join conferences
- Visit clients
But you must always check what activities are allowed in the specific country you are visiting. Each country can have slightly different rules about what counts as “business activity.”
Important update for April 2026
There are two systems you need to understand.
Entry/Exit System (EES)
This is now active.
- Your travel is recorded digitally
- No passport stamps anymore
- Your fingerprints and facial image may be taken
- It tracks how long you stay
ETIAS (not started yet)
- Expected to start in late 2026
- Only for visa-free travellers
- Costs around €20
- It is not a visa
If you already need a visa, ETIAS does not apply to you.
Which country should you apply to?
This is one of the most important parts of your application.
You should apply to:
- The country where you will spend the most time, OR
- If equal time, the country you will enter first

Can you apply from the UK?
Yes, you can apply from the UK if you are legally living here.
You will need to prove your residency using documents such as:
- BRP
